| Criminal Court in Kew Gardens |
|
The Criminal Courthouse for Queens, New York is located within the city of Kew Gardens. Constructed between the years of 1956 to 1961, the courthouse also contains a prison. Groundbreaking took place in March of 1956 and the complex was completely finished in 1961. This massive structure is located at 125-01 Queens Blvd. and consumes 5.4 acres in the area. This massive structure took $21 million dollars to build.
The courthouse sits parallel to Queens Blvd. and is recessed from the street. The borders of the land this facility sits on are marked by Queens Blvd. to the West, Hoover Ave. to the South, 132nd Street to the East and 82nd Ave. to the North.
This building is an important part of the government in New York because it contains the Offices of the District Attorney, offices from the Department of Probation as well as the Department of Corrections, The Criminal Term of the Supreme Court and the facilities of the Criminal Court.
This building is considered a “modern-style” structure and is in the shape of the letter “H.” On one side of the building contains the Criminal Court and the other side contains the Men’s Detention House. Inside the house there are both cells and dorms, occupational activity areas, an infirmary, gym, chapel and library. Lawyers for the inmates have a designated area as well, called the consultation rooms. On the roof of this wing, inmates can go to outside recreation in a specially created rec cage.
Centered in the middle of town, this great structure matches the architecture of the area. Unless passersby were knowledgeable about what services this building provides, one may never be aware the Queens House of Detention sits behind the building’s façade. |
